Steel Drum Garageband Download: Impress Your Friends with Steel Drum Covers of Popular Songs

Steelpans or steel drums are a type of musical instrument that originates from Trinidad and Tobago in the Caribbean. The modern pan is made from large industrial drums, hence its other name steel drums. Despite this, the instrument is not actually a drum, as it doesn't have a membrane. The pan element itself is struck with rubber-tipped sticks to produce sounds. Steel pans can be various sizes and some have many more notes than others. Some pans will feature up to 30 different notes and some have only three or four. Notes that are lower on the musical scale require a larger surface area, so they tend to feature on pans with fewer notes.

US based steel drum makers Pantheon Steel began developing Halo handpans in 2007. We contacted Kyle and Jim regarding obtaining a Halo drum for recording. They felt very strongly that if their drums were to be sampled, then they wanted to be there to play them for us - and provide us with the the very best Halos they had available. The Halo, now called the Halo Genesis, is larger and heavier than the Hang, giving it a lower voice, a baritone to the original's tenors and altos. We sampled two models, one tuned to C (with 8 notes) and one in B (9 notes).

Rockcreek Steel Drums is one of the largest manufacturers of steel drum musical instruments in the United States. Arguably also inspired by the Hang, their steel tongue drum is a newly developed instrument that is a cross between a traditional Caribbean steel drum, a wooden tongue drum and a Kalimba.Soniccouture Pan Drums features a pair of tongue drums tuned chromatically, played with mallets. The sound is much brighter and more delicate than the Hang or Halo, and complements those instruments very nicely.

To help you get in the holiday spirit, Ample Sound has released Cloudrum, a free steel tongue drum instrument (AU, VST, AAX) that offers a range of 3 octaves, two mic positions (stereo/mono), four different articulations and more.

I used a Casio keyboard with a direct line to fat finger the drums in. I used my Ibanez bass and Takamine acoustic for rhythm, and then added an electric guitar rhythm using my Spirit guitar through a Boss ME-8 effects processor for the phase shifter. A BIAB rhythm mandolin gave a little added "boom chukka" and completed the rhythm tracks. I laid the vocals and then put on a BIAB harmonica, pedal steel guitar, and lead guitar. I think I recorded it all little hot and it sounds overdriven, but my hard drive broke and I lost all my individual tracks, so I think I'm stuck with this working copy (It's all I could recover of it.) So anyway, all the blame is mine except the following BIAB tracks:Mandolin: Andy LeftwichHarmonica: TJ KlayPedal Steel: Steve HinsonLead Guitar: Brent MasonLyrics
